INTRODUCTION Particulate fillers are used in polymers for reasons such as cost reduction, improved processing, density control, electrical properties, as flame retardants, and for the improvement of mechanical properties. Each filler type has different properties influenced by its size, shape, and surface chemistry. Calcium carbonate is one of the most commonly used fillers in thermoplastics. It is also the best filler to use to increase the flexural modulus of polypropylene with limited effects on its impact properties. Unfortunately, the filler particles tend to stick to each other during processing, resulting in aggregates and agglomerates. The objective of dispersion is to reduce these aggregates and agglomerates to an acceptable size at a reasonable cost. Therefore, filler dispersion is an important parameter in order to obtain a homogeneous finished compound and maintain the improved performance. Understanding the mechanism of agglomerate dispersion is essential for the design of mixing equipment and their optimization. Screw extruders are the major processing machines used for mixing fillers with polymers. In intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders (TSE), mixing takes place mostly in the kneading section as a result of shear and elongation. The co-rotating TSE is a versatile device that can provide mixing ranging from intensive dispersive to laminar distributive depending on the screw configuration. The nature of the flow in single-screw extruders limits their capacity for dispersive mixing. However, coupled with a mixing unit section they can be used with a certain degree of success for compounding. This study distinguishes itself from others in that the dispersion state is highly quantified. We have developed a comprehensive methodology to characterize the dispersion of CaC[O.sub.3] in polypropylene. We have evaluated many techniques of preparation of samples such as cryogenic microtoming, polishing of surfaces, and oxygen plasma etching, as well as using thin films obtained either by film blowing or by compression molding. Evaluating the dispersion from microtomed samples is time-consuming if one is to obtain representative analysis. The area of inspection of a microtomed sample is relatively very small. The analysis of samples prepared by plasma etching is complicated; the etching time is an important factor for revelation of the morphology. Very long times of etching can lead to disintegration of the agglomerates. The preparation of films by film blowing requires large quantities of material. During plastification of the polymer matrix the dispersion state could be modified. Compression molding of thin films can lead to the deformation of those agglomerates larger than the film thickness; however, it also enables a quick determination of the dispersion state.

The most serious early immediate complication of facial paralysis is due to corneal exposure. The surgical management of the eye is often directed towards the upper lid but the lower lid contributes significantly to the problem of exposure keratitis and corneal ulceration. The contour and position of the lower eyelid influence normal lacrimation. The traditional procedure of lateral tarsorrhaphy is a static procedure that has a number of aesthetic and functional disadvantages (OConnell 1994, Talbot and Atlas 1995, Levine 1994). The “dynamic” procedures of gold weight implantation and palpebral spring are more successful in reanimation of the upper lid. The advantages of gold weight implantation were discussed by the authors in a previously reported series (Atlas 1995).
